THE 3 KEY ELEMENTS WHEN PLANNING AN ALTERNATIVE WEDDING.
When it comes to weddings, traditionally for we think of the white dress, church ceremonies, everything being very formal, plus super rigid in terms of the structure of the day and events within in.
However, many couples are moving away from this because it does not fit their individuality or personality. This is where planning an alternative wedding comes into play…
WHAT IS AN ALTERNATIVE WEDDING?
An alternative wedding is essentially when someone wishes to break the traditions of the past.
However, as this can be done in 101 different ways, it means there is a whole spectrum of ways a wedding can be classed as alternative.
And I do think generally, weddings in the UK are becoming more of a hybrid of a traditional wedding and an alternative wedding. Keeping what traditional elements work for a couple and binning the rest off.
But when it comes to a more full-on alternative wedding, typically it’s individuals who identify with an alternative style, or subculture and want to wholeheartedly embed this into their wedding day.
For couples that fully embrace planning an alternative wedding, it feels very freeing and creative as their day becomes truly unique. And honestly, I’M SO FLIPPING HERE FOR IT!
So, let’s delve into what makes an alternative wedding and explore 3 key elements to create the vibe for your alternative wedding.
1. NON-TRADITONAL WEDDING VENUES
Being real with you, your wedding venue is the backdrop to your whole day and very much sets the tone for your wedding. So, it’s super important it fits right for you.
But if you’re looking for something a little different, here are some ideas you could explore.
Outdoor Wedding Locations:
Forests, beaches, mountains, and large fields or gardens provide stunning backdrops and a relaxed atmosphere.
Absolutely fantastic for elopements or micro weddings if you’re planning on going for the in nature, outdoorsy vibe. Particularly as of 2021 you can now get married anywhere outdoor in England, (Scotland is cool and was already that way), Wales still holds some restrictions but 100% doable in a way like it wasn’t before.
But there are also some really fantastic wedding venues that are set in forests and nature that provide the desired feeling of in nature too.
Unique Spaces:
Think along the lines of theatres, libraries, museums, ruins, botanical greenhouse gardens or even crypts.
If you have a big interest or love for something and it can be represented in a physical location, and why not see if there is a venue that fits the bill for your wedding.
City & Urban Wedding Settings:
Warehouses, rooftops, and art galleries offer a modern, more edgy vibe.
Now I’ll be honest, I’m an outdoor in nature kinda woman at heart, but I do love a venture into a city.
There is literally so much variety when it comes to wedding venues that you’re sure to find something you like if you’re more of a city person. Plus, there is amazing architecture, icon features and murals to take advantage of for couple portraits which vary from city to city.
Essentially, go wild with the wedding venue if you want to. But most importantly find one that’s right for you.
2. WEDDING STYLE AND AESTHETICS
Styling of your venue and clothing can also be a big one for alternative weddings. It’s a great way to really incorporate your individual style and personality. Here’s some approaches you could consider.
Dark & Gothic:
Talking about blacks and deliciously deep rich colours everywhere to truly live out your gothic dreams. Maybe some cheeky antiques, chandeliers, velvet runners, and a shit load of lovely tall candles.
Vintage & Thrifted:
So many ways to go with this one, but you can bring your chosen era back to life for one day. Plus, if you’re getting any second-hand items to achieve this style, you’re being environmentally friendly and isn’t that a nice bonus.
All About The Colourful:
You don’t need to go for classic colours or pure whites. You can have all the colour instead or go completely monochromatic with your favourite colour! And yes, this can apply to your wedding attire, no white dresses or traditional suit colours required.
Pure Party Please:
Go to town with neon lights, disco balls, and fun streamer styling for pure party vibes. Or make it a festival feeling with things like bunting, wooden signage, food trucks and string lights.
Theme Your Wedding:
A wedding theme can be based on anything such as Disney, pride, movies & books, cosplay, history, or even a holiday such as Halloween. You just have to really love and identify with the theme if you are setting one.
But letting you know if anyone is planning a themed wedding, more specifically a Halloween or Star Wars themed wedding, I’d bloody love to photograph it!
3. PERSONALISED WEDDING CEREMONIES
Okay, so the previous 2 elements where more about setting the vibe for your alternative wedding, but this is probably the most personal bit you need to consider.
What kind of ceremony do you connect with, and feel is right for you?
I think there is potentially a lack of knowledge for the full range of ceremonies and kinds of celebrants out there for you. 100% recommend doing some research for alternative wedding celebrants because there are lovely people to match any vibe you want to go for and any type of ceremony you want to have.
From nature inspired humanist celebrants, bold and colourful celebrants to even singing celebrants.
Find the right one will make your ceremony and moment of getting married that much more meaningful.
